Resort Town Race is Serious Fun

Getting Lined Up Boys Finish is Close

2007 World Championship Races are in the record books!

Since 1976, Elk Rapids Michigan has enjoyed a lighthearted, annual sporting event that combines people, water, and paddleboards. Once again, the 2007 Paddlebuoy Classic World Championship Paddlebuoy Races carried on the tradition of camaraderie and fun.

Regular visitors from around the country and local residents participated in the races, which were held on the Elk River during the town’s “Harbor Days” celebration. Racers compete in five categories - 12 & under doubles, 15 & under boys & girls, and 16 and over men and women, and (roughly) 35 and over men and women. The contestants ranged from serious to … well, not so serious, and a good time was had by all. Trophies were awarded to the first three finishers in each race, and all winners were awarded the coveted World Championship status. As an added bonus, all racers were given limited edition Paddlebuoy Tshirts.

Race Photo Doubles Racers Win Their Heat

In this town of 1500 people, surrounded by the crystal clear waters of Torch Lake, Elk Lake, and Grand Traverse Bay, paddleboards have been a part of the cottage owners’ leisure lifestyle since the 1920’s. The only difference now is that the 12’ wooden boards have virtually disappeared in favor of the durable, 9 1/2‘ molded plastic Paddlebuoys.
Paddleboarders have found many ways to enjoy Paddlebuoys on all bodies of water. On river, lake or ocean, the unsinkable boards can be used for games, raced, paddled for exercise or leisurely, or simply used for sunning. All three models of Paddlebuoy are internally reinforced with aluminum tubing, making them virtually indestructible. Maintenance is minimal on the Pro, and zero on the two Classic models.
